Q. When is the next general municipal election?

A. The next general municipal election will be Monday, October 27, 2014.

Q. Will there be an election prior to this date?

A. If a position on City Council or a School Board is vacated the possibility of holding a by-election would exist.  The decision to conduct a by-election would rest with City Council or the local School Board.

Q. If I cannot vote on Election Day or Advance Poll Days can I appoint a Proxy Voter?

A. If you are unable to vote on Election Day (October 27) or on any of the Advance Voting days, you can appoint a voting proxy to vote on your behalf. Under Section 44 of the Municipal Elections Act, an elector may act on behalf of one other qualified elector who is not a relative or on behalf of one or more qualified electors who are relatives.

In the case where an elector is acting on behalf of more than one qualified electors who are relatives, separate proxy forms are required. A relative means the parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother, sister, or spouse of the elector appointed.

Even if an elector is eligible to vote in more than one municipality, he/she can only vote as a proxy for one non-relative.

Appointments of Proxy Forms are available at all Municipal Service Centres and in the City Clerk's Office, 71 Main Street West, 1st Floor, Hamilton.

  • A person who is an eligible elector may only appoint another person who is also an eligible elector.
  • The elector appointed as voting proxy, must come to the City Clerk’s Office and complete BOX D (Declaration by elector appointed) in the presence of either the City Clerk, or a Manager to which this authority has been delegated.
  • The elector appointed as voting proxy must present both copies of the Appointment of Voting Proxy Form in person, with proof of their identity at the following dates/times:

During regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from Tuesday, September 16 to Monday, October 27, 2014.

Between the hours of 12:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, and Saturday, October 18; and, on Election Day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • The elector that they MUST complete BOX A (Elector making appointment) BOX B (Elector appointed) and BOX C (Statement of Elector making appointment) IN FULL. It is unlawful to sign a proxy form unless Box B is completed.
  • Note: It is a requirement that the elector making the appointment and the elector appointed are on the Voters’ List.
  • If either are not on the Voters’ List an Application to Amend the Voters’ List must be completed before submitting the Appointment of Voting Proxy Form.
  • BOX D and BOX E will be completed at the Clerk’s Office at City Hall.

Key Points

  • At the voting place, the elector appointed as the Voting Proxy will be required to take an oral oath attesting that he/she is in fact the appointed elector. Once completed, the elector appointed as the Voting Proxy will vote on behalf of the elector by whom he/she was appointed.
  • The deadline for submitting an Appointment of Voting Proxy form to the City Clerk is Election Day (Monday, October 27, 2014) at 5:00 p.m.
